Install on Synology?

Hi guys,

Apparently I've been out of touch.  I didn't even know about v5 until today!  Anyway, I've been incrementally updating various parts of my DVR systems for years but now looking to do a whole-house upgrade.  Windows has been my mainstay since 2006 but seeing that a Linux back end is available for NextPVR has got me thinking.

Has anyone installed NextPVR directly on their Synology NAS?  I don't have all the right hardware to try it yet (my NAS box is 8 years old), but I've always been interested in offloading that task to the NAS box itself.  I'll likely be upgrading hardware this Black Friday and now my head is filled with all sorts of possibilities.

What does anyone think?  I'm completely off base?

You need to provide more details on your tuners, recording needs etc.  You also need the higher end NAS if you want Docker support which may be overkill in some situations.

I'm in the US, using HDHomerun tuners (10 total, but realistically, 8 is all that's ever running).  I currently record directly to the PC running NextPVR as a backend.  I'm concerned about using a remote NAS for recording because of the amount of potential network traffic but running directly on the NAS sounded like a better solution.

Yep, that should totally doable. It gets a bit more complicated if you're using ATSC tuners connected to the NAS device, but with a HDHomeRun it's pretty straight forward. You'd need a NAS that supports docker.

Wow guys, thank you.  It looks like I'm going to have a really interesting December. I'll read up and see what I can get accomplished.

I also really appreciate a board where you can just come and hang and ask n00b questions without being crucified.  It's not so common on the internet now a days.

I run the Docker version on my DS918+ and it is going well.
Running directly on the Synology itself would be painful to setup as you would manually have to install all of the dependencies or install one of the (rarely maintained) 3rd party packaging solutions.
