In the short term, is there a way for me to tweak a config file somewhere to set this back to the standard layout again?
you can change the menu type manually by editing config.xml (where all the settings are stored) in notepad and changing the following entry

    <PreferredMenuStyle2>SlideOut</PreferredMenuStyle2>

choices are Horizontal | Vertical | Slideout
