How can I change the displayed channel name?

Create the group, add them in the order you want and in config.xml make sure to set <SortChannelGroups>false</SortChannelGroups>

You can add custom groups, but the channels are always in channel number order.

Sub, I misunderstood I guess <SortChannelGroups>false</SortChannelGroups> must be the groups themselves. More useful to me would be to have the sort on the group members and get them in database order, so favourites could be at the top. It is really hard to plan all your groups themselves to get the order and I'm not sure it is that useful.
