I am using a hauppauge pvr 150 with the included remote and have found this problem to be most annoying. The remote works perfectly other than rewind. when i hit rewind, instead of rewinding, the picture just freezes when I hold it down. If I tap it, the picture will freeze for a second, then continue to play without sound at normal speed (forward). This muted play will persist until I hit the play button again. Any idea whats going on?

Yep, the rewind works like crap. I'd recommend not using it.

This is because many of the directshow components I depend on, wont work in reverse play mode.

Ah, is there a variable in the config.xml then to shorten the length that the skip buttons goes backwards? I don't know what the default is, but it is too large when you miss a line or two in a TV show or just want to see a replay in sports.

Run the config program - you can set it in there - I use 30 seconds forward and 15 seconds back and that works quite nicely I think - I think its on the Playback tab? Can't look now as the wifes on my GBPVR pc sorry but you'll find it.
