I'm using a Harmony 628 which I have configured using HIP to simulate a Hauppauge remote. Works fine with Gbpvr and also controls my TV and Amplifier as well.

For the reciever I built a serial IR. Only cost me about $10 and it works great from a distance of about 15M. Only 1 drawback is by using serial I can't wake the box up from standby. I physically have to press the power button once a day when I turn it on. Big deal.

Mind you I could set an auto wakeup at a certain time, that would suffice in most circumstances. Though pressing 1 button doesn't bother me...8)

Another newbie here. Actually I am going to convert my current computer with some hardware. I just purchased a 250 gig external HD and DVDR.

I have standard cable, do I need to upgrade to digital?

I want to be able to record multiple shows at once and still be able to watch TV, do I need multiple capture cards?

Thanks for helping me get started. Can anyone help?

Absolutely not.

Yes. You need one tuner for each simultaneous recording/watching channel.
To record 2 shows, and watch a 3rd, you'll need 3 tuners.
Hauppauge makes the PVR-500 dual tuner card, which pairs nicely with the PVR-150 "retail" version, thus giving you 3 tuners, FM radio, remote control, IR, and both cards use the same driver set.
You can never have enough tuners!
Pentium Quad / 4Gb Dual Channel RAM / XPSP3 / 2 x PVR-500, PVR-250 / GB-PVR
