Had a streak of bad luck... my main PC blew it's motherboard after a year of instability; next PC (a celeron 900mhz) I was trying w/ an MVP due to hardware issues.

Now, my wife has offered her laptop for use as our GBPVR unit.

I'm thinking I can put a large HD in an external USB enclosure. But I can't afford to buy a PVR USBII device for input.

Is there anyway to get my existing PCI card to work in a laptop?

- through a USB interface of some sort, or a PCMIA card "adapter," or something like that? I'm doubting it, but thought I'd ask!

If you can find one, some laptop docking stations have PCI slots. Most newer ones I have seen no longer have PCI slots though.

There is something called a magma cardbus but it looks a bit $$. Maybe a cheap used one on ebay?

You'll be better off just buying a new motherboard. As long as your CPU is still viable, you can pick up even a new motherboard for $35 (used for a lot less, especially for a 900mhz celeron), and just use your old CPU, memory, and other accessories. That's not necessarily the better route to go (buying a motherboard to support an older CPU), but it's definitely the cheapest. Even if the CPU is not viable and/or you cannot move it to a new motherboard, you can pick up a low end P4 motherboard with CPU on eBay for cheaper than you can buy a USB tuner or a PCI enabled dock for your laptop. If you watch, you can even get the used P4 motherboard with RAM installed, so you wouldn't have to buy new RAM. You should be able to use all of your other components on the new motherboard, but there might be a bit of a problem with it fitting in your system case if the motherboard is a different formfactor (ATX, miniATX, etc.).

You're definitely in the right place for techie help on getting you up and going again.

GBPVR system info intentionally left blank because I'm personally
insulted that you can't remember it from previous signatures.
