Hello,

I have a TV card Hauppauge wintv-pvr150 on my computer.
I am interested in capturing video from my VCR (from a video cassette) to the computer, at highest quality possible. I have windows XP. local system is PAL.

I configured the software GBPVR to the best of my understanding, created a new channel, plugged the VCR to the pvr, and began recording.

A 1.5 hours VHS movie became a ~4 gigabyte MPEG2 file.

I have 2 question please:

1. on the computer, the movie looks great. However, when I burned it to a DVD and tried to view it on my DVD/TV, it was "jumpy" (sorry about the English, not sure which adjective to use... ), The image slightly flickers.
Checked the disc again on my computer, on the DVD drive, and it looks fine. What could be causing this?

2. Is there a way to capture in avi format or some lossless format? instead of mpeg2? perhaps I am missing something in GBPVR configuration?

Thanks!
Tom

I'm not sure why you are seeing the flicker, but I have used the Hauppauge WinTV application to record VHS tapes and then burn to DVD. Its onscreen controls make the process much easier to do in real time. GBPVR is awesome for delayed playback, but I've found WinTV to be quite handy for this type of recording.

the pvr150 only records in mpeg and it has hardware encoder
you would have to convert it to avi after it was captured

dunno about the jumpiness

thanks guys

for some reason I can't install wintv. that's one of the reasons I tried GBPVR...
I don't think that converting from mpeg to avi is a good idea... so I think I will try a different way of capturing video.

Thanks!

I use a Compro Videomate C200 for video capture from VHS or analogue camcorders - it works fine for me - the bundled software lets you capture to a variety of formats including avi...

Thanks Alex. I checked similar products at the time, and as much as I could find out, RCA to USB converters don't do a very good job. I read reviews about several popular converters, and most of them got bad reviews (usually losing sync between video and audio). But I don't know that one, I will look into it.

justinhussey91, I actually don't need a converter, because my video editing software handles burning to DVD, and that's all I need. But thanks!
