What decoder are you using?
If you have a recent Nvidia card, it comes with the decoder (not sure about onboard ones, look on the CD's that came with the system/motherboard).
Download and install the decoder from hauppauge (Intervideo non-CSS).
If you have PowerDVD, then try Cyberlink's decoder. If you have WinDVD, try Intervideo's.
These can all make a huge difference in picture quality, and playback stutters/colours/contrast/etc.
Turn off system restore on the recordings drive.
