"tearing" live TV with new laptop

It sounds a bit like what happens to me if I disable de-interlacing - have you explored these options in the config?

when I use the TV-out it is the second display - when I'm not using it, its disabled. So I'm still not really following you.
As regards de-interlacing, I'm pretty sure the MPEG2 decoder should be handling all that automatically. I haven't noticed anything that looks like interlacing artefacts. What deinterlace settings do you recommend trying? I've also noticed that high bitrate channels like BBC3 have more tearing problems than low bitrate channels like ITV2. I get more problems too if the laptop is running on batteries than when it is plugged in. It could well be that the CPU is just struggling to keep up with the decoding?

I spent a fair bit of time faffing with it last night (cue annoyed wife), here's what I found out:-
Overlay produces the smoothest results, but I can't use the overlay in clone or extended desktop mode. I can however display fullscreen video from the overlay on the TV and have GBPVR in a window on the laptop display. Since I use the TV Guide a lot this isn't really a solution - but at least the ATI DVD decoder does automatic aspect ratio correction :-) Tried changing overscan/underscan/flicker fixer/sharpness settings etc., no joy. Tried changing resolutions also, no joy. Having watched a CPU trace, overscan averages about 25% for fullscreen live TV, whereas VMR9 is more like 50-60%. I'm pretty sure now that the tearing is probably something to do with not being able to render frames fast enough. When I watch the credits scroll past at the end of the show, the normally smooth scrolling is a jerky mess in VMR9. So - does anyone know which is the most CPU-efficient MPEG2 decoder? Cheers Dave

It shouldn't be a performance issue, the specs of your laptop are more than enough for decoding. What's the native res of your LCD? A lot of modern laptops have very high resolution screens and i've seen this cause a lot of problems in video playback. Does a change in destop resolution make any difference?
In terms of deinterlacing, the best playback comes from using the dscaler decoder but it's a bit of a CPU eater. I find the Intervideo decoder coupled with the deinterlace filter set in config->misc is a great compromise. The native resolution of the LCD (17") is 1440x900, quite a bit higher than my old 1280x854 (15").
I've been reading the sticky thread at the top of the forum - seems I'm not alone in this problem but many people seem to be mucking about with quartz.dll which I'm not comfortable with. I'm planning to try boosting the recordingservice priority in the config file, and the Nvidia MPEG2 decoder, see if that helps. One other thing I might try is a different Demux as I've heard that this can cause problems (apparently the Elecard one is good):- http://www.dvbviewer.com/oliver/Tools.html Cheers Dave

I think I've finally fixed this problem. The solution in the end was to switch to VMR7 and use the Nvidia PureVideo decoder, also set to VMR7. I don't get any tearing now, and as a bonus it uses a lot less CPU than before.
Only one slight issue - I get a nasty glitching screen for a few seconds before Live TV starts when selecting programs from the guide. It's the same kind of glitch you get when changing screen resolutions. Anyone any idea what might be going on? Cheers Dave |
