First I will describe what I want my system to do, then I will describe what I have already decided on, then I will ask the questions of the hardware, software and other options I'm not sure about or missing tid bits, then I will leave my usual audiophile quote. Worst part is my woman will be using this system, so three very important aspects must be followed: 1.) must set up quickly and easily 2.) must be easy to learn to control the remote 3.) must be stable, one crashand she will want a Tivo. One crash during Gilmore Girls and you will be seeing my bloody murder in the news. You guys have helped me choose most of the items I've chosen, but I am just listing everything at once instead of many little posts.
My system, (What I want it to do)
I want the system I'm building to do these things:
Play live TV
Record TV programs ahead of time
allow me to view program information for that day at least if not further into the future
Play Mpeg and MP3 files off my computer network (on a mapped network drive)
Show the Weather
Show TTX (teletext - I'm in europe)
Allow me to control all remotely around the house (prefer wifi and IR mix)
Play tv and video files on TV
Allow me to sort by album and artist on the tv screen for music.
My IPAQ to provide a Front End for managing my music collection >12,000 songs and music videos
PVR software must be compatible with O2Grabber
What I already have planned to use: ( I only have the IPAQ already so am open to other ideas for hardware)
GBPVR - for recording, weather, mp3, mpeg, divx, show listings, display on tv
XLobby or Net Remote to control it, runing on my Ipaq via ir and wifi... PPC support a must
Computer - Shuttle XPC SN21G5 3400+ AMD 64, 1-2G RAM, 200 Gig HD, DVD-ROM, USB 2.0 802.11G
hauppauge winTV pvr 500 (dual inputs allow recording and watching at same time on same tv, supports TTX)
CMU11 X10 output
Gyration wireless RF keyboard and mouse
O2grabber for EPG (works perfectly!!)
Not Sure about this stuff and would like help on:
-Video Card PCI-E is a must, needs TV out, was going to use Media MVP but I don't want a big box, or ethernet cable running around there. ATI? not sure, would love ideas, and would consider a USB device or a convertor to go from SVGA to S-video or RCA
-Xlobby and Net Remote do not communicate with GBPVR and their PVR software does not have the options I want in a system.
-No USB X10 controller that I know about ( anyone know of one that isn't serial for 220 that is?)
-How to control X-10 from remote, not intersted in firefly remote, I want to use my damn IPAQ
-Now I know most of this will work together, but if anyone knows a program besides GB that will give me all this support, preferably in their own program, not using other programs for playback, this would mean I have to make more controls to take care of each program and get very complicated.
Any other Ideas would be great!
