Better video seeking

Currently, the video is only seakable in HUGE jumps or using a fastforward that is barely distinguishable from normal play (except that it lacks audio).

It would be nice if I could point & click at the video progress bar and have it seek to that position.

Failing that, better control over the seeking, because frankly, the current seeking system is very unhelpful.

I love the current system.

I set the FF/RW buttons to do a 10 second skip. The skip buttons do a 60 second skip. If I want to jump forward or back a certain number of minutes, I can type (for example) 2-5-skip to just 25 minutes.

Do you have any suggestions other than mouse control? most peope use a remote, so mouse control isnt that useful.

I kinda like it the way it is right now. I set the forward-skip to 60 seconds and the back-skip to 20. That way I can easily jump forward in minutes, and if I skip back I don't skip so much...

Even using the Current Hauppauge lame software and firmware, you cannot go bak 2 minutes or forward 10 minutes. It just plain does not work.

The only fault on my theory is that the MVPMC project, which plays ReplayTV files on the MVP, does use the "Skip to 50% of the movie" or "Skip to 10% of the movie" and it works quite good.

It works fine here. The only issue I'm aware of where it doesnt work, is if you have a PVR150 that produces the timestamp errors, but a solution was provided in Hauppauge PVR150 drivers recently.

What happens for you when you try?

Many people may use a remote, but there are plenty of people who use the mouse. If you added improved seeking for the mouse, it would not interfer with the remote and provides better on computer seeking.

Heck, my ATI remote drives my mouse, so even with my remote I would be able to take advantage of it.

I would like to see the same ability in the progress bar. The way i've seen it done for remotes, is just as simple as moving the position mark with Left/Right arrow, and then press enter to jump into that time.

I don't know how well that would work in the current progressbar, but one option could be to make a new seek/jump bar. That could be easilly controlled by remote.

UP: Show seekbar
DOWN: Hide seekbar
LEFT: Decrease seek time
RIGHT: Increase seek time
ENTER: Apply seek time to video

I capture using the 350 (I am aware of the 150 problems, that is why I got the 350).

To be fair, after reading again my own post and your reply, If I watch a GBPVR recorded show that I do not touch with Comskip or reencode in any way, the Skipping works pretty good. Not as perfect as watching it on the Server itself, but good enough.

If I encode a DVD using mencoder the resulting MPG is very unstable as far as navigation. I do not believe I can improve the tweaking of the Mencoder command line any further. PBs has helped me quite a lot on this and I believe I will not get it any better.

Unless someone comes with a plugin that controls VLC remotely, meaning that from the MVP you could select DVD Menus, subtitles, languages and so on , I do not think the MVP will ever be a good DVD Media Extender.

The MVP does not support Closed Captions or Subtitles. I does not support VOBs or AC3 sounds. It is merely and MPG player. And for that price, I guess we cannot expect much more.

Sorry, but this doesnt sounds like a GB-PVR problem. This sounds like a problem with Mencoder or comclean, or whatever manipulation you're doing to the recordings.

I think you were expecting too much. Its a great player for watching movies you've recorded. Its not a DVD player. It doesnt cope with Closed Captions or subtitles, but was never intended to.
