I have set up my Hauppauge Nova-T-500 and recorded some programs, but I am unable to play back, the first frame is displayed only.

The same is true if i use media player, although if i move the slider accress the frame changes, so it does appear as if the program has been recorded.

I have downloaded some K-Lite codecs but these have made no difference.

Thanks in advance.

Try to play it in VLC. It could have something to do with bad recording (encoding) of your capture. Is it captured in MPEG or any other format (Xvid etc.)?

VLC are better to read damaged files then other player as it use its own set of FFMPEG filters and decoders. When you use Media Player Classic or any other player they make use of DirectShow (part of Windows and DirectX). It might be that some of these filters and codecs are damaged. You should be able to use K-Lites tools like Gspot and GraphEdit to see how your filters and codecs work. Use Gspot menu: System>List Codecs and other filters. You will then see if there are any red lines which is a signal that there is something wrong with these filters/codecs.

Afaik Media player classic uses it's own decoders as well.

Sounds like a problem with the decoder you're using. What video decoder do you have selected in the playback tab of the config app? If its set to 'system default' try explicitly setting it to the other options you have listed.

It is correct, but he will use k-lite codec package and it is more common to use DirectShow filters/codec (FFDSHOW) through MPC then to use MPCs internal filter and codecs.

Sometimes when I couldn't play some media files where only the first picture of video would show or there was only sound playing (no picture), there would VLC play it so I believe that VLC are very good fail back player when other player fails.

I use the same codec package and I have found that "Cyberlink Video/SP Decoder" (it has hardware support for my video card) work well for video and "Cyberlink Audio Decoder" for audio.

I use MPC with libmpeg2 set in codec (FFDSHOW) with postprocessing preset (option) and output set to YUY2 (recommended for hardware that support this like ATIs X1950XT) and "use overlay mixer>HW Deinterlacing:bob". For sound codec I use mp3lib (mp1,mp2). I suppose that you can also change. If you set any of these setting to disable in FFDSHOW you will then force MPCs internal filters and codecs to do the job.

I don't know how "default" in GBPVRs config work for video decoder, but it will also depend on your hardware in the end and how you best can take advantage of its support for colour compression (YUY2,NV12 etc) and deinterlacing among some feature that can be hardware dependent.

____
In MPC you can see how filters are connected by using: play>filters. This will show the playing media at the time and which filter/decoder/mux that are connected to make the file play (rendered) in MPC. You can even use it to play your tuner direct (in file>open device;play>filters will give you some way to control tuner/channel change), but that is depending on driver and is not a very easy way to control tuner as GBPVR do it.

It basically lets Windows Directshow pick a decoder it thinks will be compatible.
