I'm looking for a plugin to play DVDs. Transcoding, which is processing on the fly, might be the answer and is probably already done, I believe in Video Archive plugin. Dumb question alert: is transcoding what applications like PowerDVD do to play a DVD on a PC? My understanding of the term transcoding might not be accurate enough, because you can process things on the fly, but the term process can mean a lot of things, and not necessarily "read DVD MPEG2 data, convert data into something the computer can display, and then display it, all in real-time".

Right now I use AutoGK to convert a DVD to an AVI then play that in the Video Library. Probably a dumb/ignorant/difficult way to play a DVD Smile
I see xDVD plugin, but it says for the MVP. I've seen that term before, but don't know what it refers to. I have a PC with GB-PVR on it. MVP sounds like it's a closed system with GB-PVR on it, much like an Xbox is a closed system PC.

I guess I don't exactly understand your question. There is a DVD player that you enable in config. DVDs are mpeg files so if you have a compatible decoder you should be able to get that working. Transcoding is the process of converting to another format like mpeg to avi etc.
Most people also call transcoding the process to convert from one bit rate to another in the same format.

If you want to rip your DVD's to your hardrive, then you just need to install the daemon tools and that will allow you to play DVD images.
If you just rip the whole disk in a folder format (video_ts folder) then you should be able to play them through the video library no problem.

There is a 'DVD' button on the main menu that will play a DVD.

The Video Archive plug-in includes the ability to convert DVD's to mpeg files, which can then be played back via any video plug-in on any destination (including the MVP).

No wonder I didn't try the built-in DVD player, it wasn't checked in the config app on the Plugins tab. I knew I was treading in stupid territory!

New question: how to play a VIDEO_TS directory on the hard drive?

The video library will normally let you play DVDs that are ripped to the hard drive, but you needed to have retained the VIDEO_TS name in the path. For example c:\MyDVDs\Comedy\AceVentura-PetDetective\VIDEO_TS\*
