I got a wMVP off eBay recently.

However, when trying to configure/run wirelessly I get the message:
"MediaMVP is successfully connected to this access point but is unable to obtain an IP address".

The wMVP is 86018 rev. H3. Firmware at boot says ver. 2.05.

I'm using a Linksys WRT54GS version 1 with the very latest firmware 4.71.1 updated today.

I've tried with WEP and open network. Same problem.

It works fine wired along with my two other MVPs.

Any suggestions?

TIA

Are you broadcasting your SSID? I can't speak from experience with the wireless MVP but I've had other wireless devices (D-Link products in particular) behave in a similar manner with SSID broadcasting disabled (especially when using WEP encryption). As soon as I enabled it my problems went away.

Boy replies sometimes arrive fast! Big Grin

Tipstir: I have wireless MAC filter disabled, and other wireless equipment (Laptops, Wireless Webcam) connect just fine. I'll try though. No trace of it in the DHCP table. Will try to look when it actually tries to get an IP address.

SKiFit: I do have broadcast disabled (sort of best practice...) I'll try to enable it to see if it hits home.

I'll post my observations either way.

Thanks!

Broadcast SSID did the trick. Works fine with WEP :-)

As much as I don't like to broadcast my SSID, I'll keep it there for now.

Next thing is to get it to load GBPVR - currently it gets stuck in loading the mvpmc-dongle, but I'll try a few things here with that before escalating it to the forum gurus Wink

Thank's for the quick tips leading to a resolution.

Awesome news, glad to help Smile

I know what you mean, I felt kind of queasy enabling that broadcast switch myself, but I figured that between WEP and MAC address filtering -- even though they are both hackable -- I'm still safe from the casual neighborhood freeloader. If some script-kiddie and/or war-driver really wants to steal my paltry bandwidth then I'll eventually notice them in my logs. I've got my LAN locked down as tightly as possible.

And if someone wants to force their way past your WEP encryption, they'll have zero problems seeing your router with SSID Broadcast turned off. It's still being broadcast, just not as visibly. This is one of those useless security tips that just won't go away.

WEP and/or MAC address whitelisting to prevent casual freeloading, WPA with strong password for intrusion prevention (aka, security).

Thanks for the input.

I'm aware of the security levels. My prime concern is the freeloaders. I'm not too concerned where I live. I only have a couple of neighbours with teenage kids (and friends) who I don't want to give any open invitations/ obvious targets to try to access Rolleyes

If someone REALLY wanted access to my data - removing a window and leaving with my equipment would probably be the most effective by far...

I believe once your wMVP connects to your router and the MAC address and such is stored in your router, you can then again disable SSID on your router. That's what I had to do to get my wMVPs working some time ago.

It would still be wise to turn on MAC filtering though.

In the context of the wMVP assuming you are enabling WEP 128 don't bother with MAC filtering or hiding SSID's you are just making your network more difficult for you to manage and it is a waste of time (and maybe even giving you a false sense of security). Your neighbours won't get in if you've got a reasonable password, and anyone can easily download the tools to get your MAC or SSID in seconds.

Of course the best thing to do is what most people recommend a bridge with real WPA2 security.
