Another thing to consider is where is he going to store all this music, and how will he upload it to his ipod after you have digitized it for him in the first place.

I doubt there are many portable players that could hold 3,000 cds at a time

and what about all the new cds be buys will you have to do those as well ?

there is a commercial service in edmonton that does this see http://edmonton.kijiji.ca/c-services-ent...dZ23523848

I seem to remember reading about a similar service in New York but cant find the article now

seriously: if possible, help him (show him how to do it with itunes, should be the same way as with itunes on windows) to do it on his own, if he's not willing to do it (to much hassle / work) it's no longer your problem, it's his collection... i would just hate it to do the dirty laundry of somebody else, no matter the money involved

From what I have seen Itunes on Macs is much easier than Itunes on windows

I was going to have him buy an external usb drive. A 500 MB drive should have no problem holding 36,000 songs even at high quality. Would then image the drive with acronis and burn the image to DVD's for backup.

Had not really thought about needing to digitize new cd's as he buys them. Does someone with 3000 cd's still need to buy music??

Going to try to get him started this weekend. I may offer to scan his covers for him. I really don't feel like telling him to buy a scanner then being responsible to get it up and running on a Mac.

i would avoid the DVD's & imaging for backup. why?
1. imaging only makes the whole thing complicated, better to backup the files/folders directly. no messing around in 5 years to get the imaging software to run again just for restoring something lost
2. i'm not sure about the lifespan of burned DVD's. if they behave like CD's (pressed ones from the beginning era starting to fail on read access, any professional archivers worst nightmare Wink) for easy access / lifespan you might be better of with another external drive which at best you never touch / move... or use DVD-RAM, that has at least some sort of error correction
