I want to record OTA HD to divx/xvid files, and live comskip would be really nice.
What are the cheapest parts I could use to build a system that runs like a cat from a bath?

Thanks.

You'll want as much CPU horsepower as you can budget -- video conversion is extremely processor intensive when using general purpose processors (i.e., Intel and AMD x86 chips). Doing it to HD material just makes matters worse.

Seeing how quad-cores are pretty cheap nowadays, I think I'll get one of them.

What should I do for the GPU?

Edit: I'm liking the HVR-1600, but since I don't have a cable hookup, I'd prefer a card with 2 ATSC tuners. Do they exist? This one isn't a must since I only watch/plan on recording a few shows and they're on at different times, but it would be nice.

The only card that i have heard of that is the vbox cats eye 164e
listed on this page http://www.vboxcomm.com/product3.htm
Its kinda funny with the dtv transition under a year and 6 months away that there would be more 2 or more atsc tuner cards coming out

So if I get a core 2 quad q6600, HVR-1600, 2gb ram, and a $50 HDCP supporting graphics card (incase I ever want to add HD-DVD/Blu-ray), I should be fine, right?

HDHomeRun is a dual ATSC tuner. No analog though.

Look at the 2400/2600 cards if you want HDDVD/BluRay later on.

I use 2 Twinhan 3250 A+D capture cards (does analog and ATSC, but haven't messed with the analog) for around $30 each. I haven't had a problem with either of them and they are quite affordable. Look for them at newegg or ebay.
