FYI, to limit your digital expectations here in Ottawa you will only get either 3 QAM stations (CBC and CTV SD from Montreal and BET) with AC3 so there will be audio sync issues with the mvp or 2 OTA ATSC HD channels, (CBC and Radio Canada). There is other QAM on demaind programming available at times but it can't be guaranteed and doesn't lend itself well to viewing or watching on a PVR.

Thank you for the comments above. I have no problems at this time but I figured the more I know before the installation, the less problems that will arise.

I now have a HVR1600 and and planning on hooking it up over the next week or so (when I have computer hardware assistance available to me) so that I will be able to record 2 (hopefully 3) programs simultaneously and have access to my "digital" channels available from the set box that unencrypts the signal from the cable company.

I have 2 analog tuners and 1 digital tuner (1 PVR150 and 1 HVR1600 model 01181 using drivers 3.4A and not 3.4D because th Hauppauge site suggests that the 3.4d is only for other models of hvr1600) and I am paying for digital cable in Ottawa accessible from a set box.

Based on the comments above, I think I should hook up the prv150 analog tuner to the set box (Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000) and hook the new HVR1600 dual tuner directly to the cable (bypassing the set box). I think this will allow me to get the "digital encrypted channels" and regular channels on the prv150 tuner (via the set box), at the same time as the regular unencrypted channels on the analog tuner of the hvr1600 (via the cable line) and possibly the 3 QAM stations (I am assuming that it would be more complicated to hook up the HVR1600 to get both over the air stations and cable stations via the different tuners and I don't currently have an antenna). To make this work the most efficiently, assuming I am right on what I can possibly receive, I would list the channels as follows in my capture source tab (recordings will occur from top down and watching will occur from bottom up):
capture device 1: hvr1600 analog
capture device 1: hvr 1600 digital
Capture device 2: pvr 150.
This is because I want the analog tuner that is capable of recording the encrypted channels through the set box to be free to record an encrypted show without worrying that it is already being used to record something that isn't encrypted. The digital channel will only get the QAM stations anyway so it doesn't seem to matter what order it is on the list (and for now, it doesn't look like I will get much selection but it would be nice to see what a digital program looks like). The only downside to this order seems to be if I am watching live tv just before a encrypted show is scheduled to be recorded. As long as I remember to exit live tv before it starts, the tuner that uses the set box will be available to record. The one thing I am not clear on is whether I need digital channels at all since I have a 32in Toshiba CRT TV and it may be that I can watch digital tv on a CRT TV or that even if I do, it will be no different from an analog signal. It is a model that is very close to the Sony Trinitron.

I have added NativeUtilities.dll and the qam.ini file from the patch to the directory C:\Program Files\devnz\gbpvr\BDA\ATSC

Any comments or flaws in my logic?

That doesn't sound right. The HVR 1600 in 1.1.5 should work without a patch and the default QAM.INI works with Rogers too.

The good new is right now there are 7 more SD channels broadcasting clear QAM today. To bad you didn't get your present early, for most of December 3 PPV channels were broadcasting in clear QAM, likely by error, but they went back to subscription on Friday.

Once again, I stand corrected. I missed this patch for the HVR 1600

carpeVideo Wrote:The easiest way to do this is to open the Hauppauge database (its access) and grab the frequencies that it has found. I then paste them to excel and do a pivot. Then just create a qam.ini using these frequencies. It makes GBPVR's scan much faster -

How do you do this exactly? I'm not much of an MS Office kinda guy. I found a bunch of clear QAM by doing "all countries" instead of just US. Looks like most HDTV stations have several frequencies that show up.

For example WOWT-DT comes in on 7 different channels:

Preset Name Freq
2039 qam-2(5) 485800000
2041 qam-2(6) 485950000
2043 qam-2(7) 486250000
2893 qam-2(97) 695650000
2895 qam-2(98) 695800000
2897 qam-2(99) 695950000
2899 qam-2(100) 696100000

How do I know which one of the seven to use for adding to the qam.ini?
system 1 - PVR-250 and HVR-1600

system 2 - PVR-150 and HVR-1600
