yea i saw that. also one thing i noticed was that when it try to schedule a task in windows scheduler, it says I do not have access to perform this task. I think its because I don't have a password to log on to windows. So what happens is that the system doesn't wake up and run that task. If i set a password on the account and type that into the scheduler, everything works fine. It wakes up and performs the task. do the people that put the system into standby have a password set to log on or not? i'm just trying to go one by one and eliminate issues

I dont know. I'm not sure what issues there may be around having a password or not on the account.

Afaik there is a setting where you can enter whether you want to enter a password or not when coming out of standby. You can find it in windows config screen-power settings.(something like that)
AMD Athlon 64 3000, HDD: 80, 120, 200 GB, Hauppauge 350 + 150, MVP, Asus 6000L Laptop client, Asus X50sl client,
Fritz!box 7140 modem/router, GBPVR 1.3.7.

i disabled the "ask for password when resuming from standby" in power options in the control panel, but still no go

i have simple sharing disabled, any chance that is creating trouble?

i just dont get it, i havent changed the system configuration much from the defaults. maybe i should update my bios?

Maybe you need to set a password, then you can do: run-control userpasswords2 to make the system start automagically with that password without asking for it.
I know xp sometimes wants a password without an obvious reason. Don't know if that's the case here.
I have simple filesharing enabled without any of your problems.
