I've seen "telnet to MVP" suggested as a diagnostic aid in many forum threads, but in order to do it, how do you find out the ip address of the MVP? Is the address issued by the server PC? Is it always the same? etc. etc. ?

Depends on how it's connected. Do you have it connected directly to your pc (via a cross-over network cable), or is there a router/hub in between the two?

If there is a router involved, the router is most probably the one that gives out the address. In the router's web interface, there is usually a way of seeing which ip addresses are leased.

As to whether it's the same address always, the short answer is "usually". There is no guarantee, though. The router is allowed to give whichever address it wants to the MVP, but since there is no use in changing it, it usually gives it the same always.

If you have the MVP connected directly to your pc, then I don't know the answer Sad

Both PC (GBPVR/MVPserver) and MVP are connected to a Netgear FS608UK 8-port hub/switch. This hub is then connected to my ADSL router which acts as the DHCP server for my network. I will have a look on the router's web browser interface but I don't recall ever seeing a page with allocated IP addresses listed. In any case although the router allocates all my PC IP addresses I would have thought that the MVP got its IP address from whichever PC was acting as MVP server. Can anyone tell me for sure where an MVP gets its IP address from?

The messages you read that mention telnet are for the mvpmc dongle, which has a telnet server enabled. This is not the case in the Hauppauge dongle. In mvpmc you can see the IP or host name on the About screen.

The IP is usually assigned through DHCP leases, which is usually on the home router. If you need a fixed IP see if you can set an IP for the mac address, this is often an option, even on basic models. Otherwise the DHCP server will still try to lease the same IP but this history is lost if you power off your router.

For cross connect, you can create a DHCP server on you PC or use the Microsoft ICS feature.

There is also a BOOTP method of getting the IP when DHCP isn't available, but mvpmc doesn't use it and I don't think GBPVR does either.

In answer to this - look at the bottom of your MVP to find the hardware address then type arp -a at a command prompt to see the IP address allocated to the MVP. The MVP needs to be switched on or have recently been switched on as the arp cache gets flushed after a while.

My firewall (Kerio 2.1.5) shows the connection between server and IP along with the IP address).

Thanks for all the answers. As suggested, I found the table of MAC vs IP addresses on the LAN page of my router browser interface.

BTW, I am trying out the MVPMC dongle ATM. Behaviour is still twitchy wrt ff, etc., but I guess I'm spoilt by the near perfect TiVo UI on our cable system.

The problem may well be my slow PC, but, I could be getting a P4 hand-me-down PC soon. That will prove things one way or the other.
