We're in Wellington, about 200 miles from Christchurch where the quake hit. It was in the early hours of the morning when hit, but I was up at the time, and it felt pretty big even this far away.

On the news I was surpised to see the extent of the collapsed buildings, bent railway tracks, flooded roads etc. It looks like brick buildings dont fare very well in earth quakes.
