I am trying to install NPVR on a machine where the boot drive is "G:" (no idea whether that is related or not), and I simply can NOT get the recording service to install. If I type "Nrecord install" (which is what I thought I saw the install process doing) from a command prompt (when in the NPVR directory), it does nothing that I can see (no errors in event logs either). But the service definitely never shows up in my list of Windows services (and if I try a restart from the tray menu, it throws an error about no installed service by that name). Any ideas on why this service won't install? Oh, I'm running XP SP2.

Thanks!
Kevin T.

Yes, indeed. It appears that something about the service install is path-hard-coded (based on both of our experiences). Sub? Can you confirm?

I cant see anything hardcoded.

After install, what values do you have in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\NPVR\DataDirectory and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\NPVR\InstallDirectory. On x64 version of window, they'll be in \Software\Win6432Node\...

I think the problem is, that nPVR uninstaller fail to remove nPVR service from system durning uninstall. Runing next install, path is not updated, becouse service is already installed.

It happend on Win7 too - i was wrong it it XP problem only)

To reproduce - install for example to C:\nPVR1, uninstall (service will remain in OS) and install again to C:\nPVR2 - service path will remain set to c:\nPVR1.

EDIT:
If i remove the nPVR recording service manually SC delete "npvr recoding service" and reinstasll npvr to c:\nPVR2 service is installed correctly.
So there must be bug in nPVR unistaller.

Registry Values....

DataDirectory:
G:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\NPVR

InstallDirectory:
G:\Program Files\NPVR

So in my case, this actually looks correct. Now I'm really puzzled as to why this service won't install. This particular computer had never had NPVR, only GB-PVR -- so I don't think UNinstallation was related to my issue. Fedex tracking shows that my repaired motherboard will be delivered today, so now I can go back to my newer HTPC computer anyway (that was already running NPVR just fine). So at this point my own issue is not urgent, although I'm still curious as to why it couldn't install the service.

Thanks for looking into it, Sub....

@ktalley:
Yes, registry is set correctly, problem is that nPVR service is not uninstalled/updated if already installed.

@hoborg:
Right. But in my case, the service has NEVER been installed. I've even searched the registry to make sure that there is no trace of NRecord service anywhere.
