After cutting back on shelf space and buying an additional 1.5Tb of disk space, I am converting a load of DVDs etc to video files on the PVR. So far I have been using Handbreak to convert them to H264 while keeping the DTS/AC3 audio (use spdif to an external amp that does DD/DTS so dont want to lose those audio tracks). All works well, except I have a habit of arsing up the aspect ratio. Setting the aspect option to "none" seems to do the trick.

What about Blurays? I dont have many but have absolutely no idea what to do with them. I can rip them fine using AnyDVD but am then left with ~38Gb of loveliness. Is there a tool to keep only the main movie, convert to a video file that'll play (e.g. .mkv) and lose the crap you dont want? I've got one that fails the trick of "picking the longest feature" to determine the main movie as that gives the directors commentary... Any googling I've done on the matter comes up with similar quality looking tools to those that advertise here Rolleyes

Try MakeMKV. It's been a while since I've used it, but it seemed ok last time I tried.

I've not used it for Bluray, but I've always been happy with DVDFab. The full version does the rip and recode to .mkv (among other formats). http://www/dvdfab.com

after ripping with anydvd, i just use TSMuxerGUI to save the streams i want to a single .m2ts...which i use ffmpeg to shrink down to a .mp4 file of around 4g or less...excellent quality..
tsmuxergui can handle pretty much any disc i throw at it...hd audio etc..
basically it loads the bd playlist, you still have to select correct playlist yourself...but i've never had a big problem with figuring it out..
i usually just start remux and cancel and check the partial file for correct languages/audio etc..

there's also tsremuxer but it's not as reliable or polished..

i also recently figured out how to use mencoder to go from dvd straight to .mp4...Big Grin
no ripping first...straight from commercial dvd...Smile
you still have to select correct title, but it even helps with that for most dvds...

I use AnyDVD HD with clown bd (yes that is clown) to extract Blu-ray main movie to single m2ts file
Then megui to make mkv file (more control than handbrake!) - I have reduced 28GB mpeg2 file to 12GB x264 mkv with no noticeable loss of quality on 42in plasma in the past.
Only Anydvd has to be paid for.
