it took so long because I checked it before uploading it and the sections that i put in were missing. So i guess with all the various installs and uninstalls... it may have been overwritten? what puts the file there? WinTV? What actually references this file? NPVR? Anyways I put the nPVR= back in and I pasted the section posted from the earlier thread.

After updating the file I always restart the hauppague ir software (i forget off hand what its called). Not sure why the sections you added were missing though, Ive never had anything alter that file to the point of removing sections I've put in. Did you say you're on XP, so no UAC issues?

to edit correct file, click start, run irremote.ini. this will open the irremote.ini file that resides in c:\windows
After saving changes to the ini file, click on the restart IR icon under All programs\WINTV. this will restart ir.exe and load the modified settings.

ok ...so here is the key for the Hauppage remote that fixed things for me...

Between reinstalls (Hauppage CD, Win TV6 WinTV 7 ...etc) which i suspect overwrite the irremote... which wipes out the entries i put in for NPVR ...coupled with miss-timed reboots to reset the WinTV remote controll task bar item ...

So for those that come after me. I suspect the solution is ... install WinTV 7, modify the file, restart WinTV Remote Control or reboot...should be as simple as that...

So i was doing all the right things... the item i was missing was to restart the WinTV Remote Control at the right time... it just so happens that when i posted the file last night i shut the rig down and restarted it this morning, reseting the WinTV software and it worked...

so it was jut the order of things and the overwrite of the file from reinstalls...

thanks all... i'll be lurking in the background reading up on the PVR part before diving into that.
