ok so i found the log files, no clue how they ended up there but a full system search found them in C:\Windows.older\Documents and Settings\Public\NPVR\Logs (a folder from 2 installations of windows ago... O_o).

Have you installed an ac3 decoder like ffdshow or ac3filter? The built in one won't work.

Martin is correct, you need an AC3 decoder.

However, you do seem to have a mess if your log files are showing up in that directory on Windows 7. You should probably get that straightened out. You might try uninstalling NPVR, then check the NPVR data path in the registry (on 64-bit windows I think it's in HKLM\Software\WOW6432Node\npvr). Make sure it's set to C:\Users\Public\NPVR, then re-install and verify that your logs show up there.

aha, that worked! i did have ffdshow installed but it wasn't selected. it also didn't like using ffdshow as an mpeg-2 decoder, but it worked when i switched it to the microsoft one.

By default the ffdshow mpeg 1 and 2 decoders are disabled.
