Assuming I have tools like Diskkeeper, Cacheman, etc, and the comfort to make changes on the system, what suggestions to do people have for a good disk writing policy?

I have an ongoing problem where windows is just working to hard to write a file (making recording and timeshift work poorly). I brienfly had a startup where it ran like a dream, so I know it can be better.

Not looking for support. Just intetested in how other people approch it.

You could try putting your LiveTV and Recording directories on seperate drives.

Have you checked if your drive needs defragging ?

Diskeeper is in place and there is 0 frag.  I have those separate, too.

I'm just lookging for any good ideas. For a day there, the write of a new file while in timeshift was intsant. I'm looking for clues to how to get back.

You need to see what is going on. Taskmgr is a good start. Look at things like waitIO (there has to be something like that in windows). Turn off unneeded services like AV. Have you got nice fast disks? Are you using maximum quality settings. Try knocking it back to normal. Run a normal defrag like defrag c: -f -v for instance.

When you record a show and play it back with say zoomplayer or WMP is there stuttering?

The problem is in generating a new file. I've started looking at the logs, and seeing there is a point when, before the program change, a new file is made in the background. Then, you switch from the file you are on to the new one for the next program. The new file is often created w/o sound, so when it changes, you think you have just lost sound.

I've been attributing to process of writing the file, but it may not be that.

The drives both test at +10Mb/sec

Btw, I don't mean to get side tracked. This isn't supposed to be a "help me fix this" post. I wanted to make it something everyone could benefit from.

I'm looking for proven disk configs like disk cache sizes, MFT sizes, cluster sizes, defrag habits, etc, et al. I know folkd like tipster have a few, and I thought putting some together into a post may be of interest to the tweakers here.
