Thanks Martin, it was the <AlternateOSDForMissingVideo> setting! I had changed this a while back to fix the missing info bar, which was due to using onboard Radeon 3200 graphics. Upgrading to a new 5450 card apparently solved that, but because I had forgotten to change this setting back, I had missing video.

@Sub, the Snapstream decoder is from BeyondTV - I just used it for a test case but had gotten the same behavior.
