In January, SiliconDust announced that the next version of the HD Homerun will have onboard H.264 Transcoding on it.
I was browsing NewEgg and noticed that it's available in December.
There's a service called Aereo.com that is essentially a DVR in the cloud. The company has thousands of TV tuners with direct line of sight to the transmitters. Users can watch live TV from their mobile devices. Aereo also provides 40 hours of DVR to their customers. It's not available in my area however.
What I would like to do is to host my own Aereo type of service from my home. I want to be able to watch live or recorded TV from my mobile devices while I'm away from home.
My thinking is that since the HD Homerun will have transcoding on it, nextpvr won't have to do any transcoding. It could just capture the stream, record it to a drive and rebound it out the Internet to the mobile device. Since the Transcoding is built in to the HD Homerun, I would expect that I could simply pause the stream and it would continue caching at home.
I'm thinking that efficiencies would be gained by nextpvr not having to transcode the stream.
How big of a deal is it that the new HD Homerun will have on board transcoding?

I'll have to wait until the devices are available before I'll know more about whether NextPVR can include support for their H.264 transcoder.

Upload caps are usually the biggest constraint here. For me transcoding down to 3Mbs is too low a lowest common denominator.

it wont transcode anything but what comes from the builtin tuners.. Sad
sure wish someone would put out a general file hardware h.264 transcoder...hardware seems to be able to easily handle it cheaply these days..
[even my sub$100 ARM tablet gpu can encode h.264HD on the fly in hardware]

i'm guessing it's the file reading issues scaring them off, afraid of support issues like "my downloaded avi from another country with an unknown codec won't transcode with your hardware.."

Many modern PC"s with Intel 3rd/4th chips already come with h/w encoding capabilities with QuickSync, so an external box is kind of redundant. Look at at qstranscode http://sourceforge.net/projects/qstranscode/ or handbrake.fr http://software.intel.com/en-us/articles...-handbrake

I've just been trying Handbrake with QuickSync and oh my is it fast! It's doing in about 8 minutes what used to take an hour. However, the file size produced looks a little larger than I'd expect so I'm not convinced by its compression efficiency yet. Still testing though (and it was a fairly grainy film I tried it with)...
