As Zeb has said XP has problems with more than one tuner. I use 3 USB DVB-T dongles on Freeview because with fewer tuners I am unable to make all the recordings I would like to make. Without DVBfix XP crashed as soon as a second recording started but installing DVBfix cured the problem. However after DVBfix was installed it only scanned the first Mux although not everyone has this problem. I ended up writing a script to uninstall the fix to do a rescan after which I reinstalled the fix for normal use. A far better fix was to install Vista instead which also cured a few minor irritations using NextPVR as it seems to be a little better than XP playing audio and video.

Hey Zeb, that's really useful info - for now I got things working just by trial and error - I found that before I installed an XP codec pack, I had limited or even no choices at all under certain settings (yes I know codec packs can cause trouble, but I need some!).

While I have you guys attention, I wonder if I could get advice on a problem that has bugged me ever since I started to use media centres?...

Even though I have used different machines with different o/s, different media centre apps and different tuner cards (infact the only common item being the arial system), I have had trouble with recordings not completing on certain channels (well, some channels more than others, in particular Film 4, but maybe that's just because of the nature of what I record on that channel - it is always a long show, so more time in which to fail?) Anyway yesterday Film 4 cut out while I was watching it. I feel it must be a bad signal, though the tv manages (with a very occasional loss of sound for a second). I tried a software thing that measured signal quality and strength which seemed to think I was ok in those respects.
Anyway... I'm going to attach the logs of what happened last nite in the hope some light can be thrown!

Thanks guys, awesome forum.

Those logs only show more unsuccessful attempts to scan for channels. The closest approach to a useful signal appears to be frequency 530000. You didn't mention whether or not you have installed dvbfix.

Hi - thanks, it's all working fine with all channels, I assumed the last log or two would be of when it quit during a film. No I didn't install dvbfix, I never heard of it before and had a look - seemed to be for media portal but I'm running xbmc. A bit reluctant incase I break anything!

It's not a mediaportal thing. Basically Microsoft cocked up and put out a later version of PsisDecd.dll which would often cause crashes when two tuners were in use at the same time. You could manually replace this file in safe mode with an older version to fix it. Someone from Mediaportal project made the dvbfix installer to make it easier.
