A reboot didn't cure the problem but unplugging for a few seconds did. The problem was that the power was always on the USB connectors when the server went into Sleep or Hibernation so the tuner was always on. I never found a way to force power down of the USB sockets. My current server powers off the USB sockets when the server hibernates so don't get the problem any more!

Lots of mainboard have a BIOS setting for this, I'v seen it on newer boards, it is sometimes called USB-charging or Offline charging. (the purpose is obviously that you should be able to charge devices from your computer even if it is not running)

Thanks Chris, but it's only one tuner in a dual tuner USB device that is failing, I have disabled it for a couple of days and had no failed recordings since. I will contact the supplier for a replacement under warranty.

Hi Graham,

I tried to rename the tuners in settings - devices to work out which one is which, but it doesn't allow me to do that.
Also when I look at the logfiles, it shows different values for device lock, present, strength and quality each time, so I find out hard to work out which tuner is actually causing the failed recordings since it's intermittent. I thought I found it and disabled the third tuner based on sub's comments, but looking at the logfile it still recorded something after disabling the device in devices?

Ooooooops! I remembered this wrong. Now that I have checked ... it isn't possible to change the tuner name. Sorry. I was remembering that you can give the tuner an alias in the System plugin ... but this would not affect the logs.

Hans.
But what I said was that ONE of the tuners was failing. I bought a replacement and that started doing the same thing after several month and was about to return it under warranty when I found it was ok in my new server PC as it powered down the USB ports.
