A switch and a hub perform the exact same function and either will work equally well in a home network. A switch operates without collisions of Ethernet packets and will provide quicker throughput in a network with many devices (and, therefore, many potential collisions). A hub will be more or less identical in a small network with only a few devices (and, therefore, few collisions).

But ... you are using a switch and that is the best device so no need to change it.

I have changed the PC with the Ceton card in it to have a static IP. We'll see if I continue to have problems. This was pretty intermittent anyway, so hard to know if it's been fixed. Thanks all.
