upgrade to 4.1 from 3.5 live tv failed

My install of Nextpvr 3.5-ish (maybe 3.7.7) has been running great for a long long time. Now I decided to try the update to see if there were any cool updates. mistake. I can open Npvr and watch a recorded show without any problems but when I select the guide it crashes. Also when I select live tv it crashes. It is recording fine and I can watch a recording while it records. Why can't computer things be seamless? I also got the direct x not installed warning in the settings screen. Tried the install with the link and that didn't work. Looked around here and saw another post with a link and that one seemed to work but didn't help anything.
I am running windows 10 64. Everything was working just fine until the update today.

it may be easier to back to 3.5. where do I find that? it might have been 3.7.7 I found that install on my computer. can I go back without uninstalling 4.1 and losing all my settings?

It looks maybe a skin file is old, like something went wrong with the upgrade. Maybe run the 'stop npvr service' shortcut, then rerun the installer.
