Hello,

I am looking to build a media PC featuring DVR functionality via NextPVR. However, I am having trouble trying to find info on compatible tuners... or should I say compatible features of tuners.

In short, I need to know whether the HDHomerun Flex DUO and HDHomerun Scribe 4K are compatible without the SiliconDust subscription service (kind of the point of OTA vs cable).

Thanks

NextPVR supports all HDHR devices, legacy and HTTP based. Although you didn't ask, others may read this so note it is not optimized the ATSC 3.0 model at this point. The number of tuners varies by ATSC 1.0 vs 3.0 recording capability. There are other issues with ATSC 3.0 too (AC-4 audio, DRM etc) too.

NextPVR doesn't support the DVR Recording engine so buying the Scribe for NextPVR use would be overkill. It also is not a NAS so using the file storage would not be possible.. It also caches LiveTV to internal storage which is a negative using NextPVR.

A couple of additional comments. In 2022 you really don't need an media PC (HTPC) since there are many better clients that offer better usability than a PC and are more suited to the media room. Really you are building a recording engine is a backend server for delivering media to clients so it doesn't need state of the art graphic or performance. Disk space and speed will be a factored by the number of clients you have, the number of tuners and recordings you do and whether you do a lot of comskip or plan on using the NextPVR web client.

Also regarding the subscription, to take advantage of any PVR you really need an EPG so it would actually be to your advantage to get a Schedules Direct subscription. Other options are here https://github.com/sub3/NextPVR/wiki/EPG.NorthAmerica.

Thanks. That's very disappointing news. Not the part about the built in DVR requiring the SiliconDust subscription (kind of expected), more the idea that some kind of subscription is pretty much required to DIY DVR OTA TV.

Hard for me to complain about a cup of coffee a month but you are free to explore the more complicated options..
