pBS Wrote:install xdvd...if you are going to use VLC then you need to d/l and install it first..then check batch files playmvpdvd.bat, playmvpdvdfiles.bat, playmvpdvdiso.bat to make sure the vlc.exe path is correct for your install [i think it defaults to c:\program files\videolan\vlc.exe so if you used defaults to install vlc you should be fine]
then check the skin settings.xml file and adjust,it's in xdvd folder in your skin,if not there, copy folder from blue skin...
once those initial adjustments are done you're in biddness..
..

Let's see if I am on the right track. I downloaded VLC(said I had to in the XDVD wiki). It installed in c:\program files\videolan\vlc.exe --do I need to do anything with GBPVR to make it work with VLC or is installing it enough? Can you elaborate on "check batch files"?

I found my skin settings--My DVD drive is D and video files all end up on E drive--what do I change, and how?? I tried to type in and it did nothing:

- <settings>
<TempFile>c:\dvd.mpg</TempFile>
<PlayMode mode="SIZE" value="150" />
<DVDDrive>f</DVDDrive>
<BaseFileDirectory>c:\</BaseFileDirectory>
<MountDVDDrive>g</MountDVDDrive>
<ForceMvpMode>true</ForceMvpMode>
</settings>

I really appreciate the help--thanks!

Just to add a little tip, some of the newer Sony titles have additional copy protection which inserts errors in the DVD IFO file struture. When ripping, a little help may be required.

Note: This is not to condone piracy, only backup or rip for playback purposes a DVD that you own. Smile

ok well first off you shouldn't need to change the batch files cuz you installed it into the default dir...as for the settings.xml file..
- <settings>
<TempFile>c:\dvd.mpg</TempFile>
<PlayMode mode="SIZE" value="150" />
<DVDDrive>f</DVDDrive>
<BaseFileDirectory>c:\</BaseFileDirectory>
<MountDVDDrive>g</MountDVDDrive>
<ForceMvpMode>true</ForceMvpMode>
</settings>

<tempfile> is the file that will be created that will play on your MVP...
open that settings.xml in notepad and edit the text to read:
<TempFIle>e:\dir\dir\file.mpg</TempFile>
or wherever the location is you want it to place transcoded file...

<playmode mode="SIZE" value="150" /> means it will start playing after it encodes 150 megs of the dvd..
[can also be changed to "TIME" and be time in secs.]

<DVDDrive>f</DVDDrive> =should be the letter of your actual dvd drive!

<basefiledirectory> is the dir it's sitting on when you first start the program...[set to where your ripped dvd folders are]

<forcemvpmode> should always be true and the mountdvddrive=the drive letter Daemon Tools is using to simulate a dvd drive to mount your iso's in..

when i said check batch files i meant check them to make sure the path in there is the same as on your machine...the batch file runs vlc so it needs to know...

Sweet--worked perfectly first time. Thanks for all the help. I am so happy with the results on one TV that I found 2 more MediaMVP's at Radio Shack to add to my other sets!

PBS. Thanks for the tips on mencoder.

It worked like a charm on the first try. I had the correct timestamps on the MVP so I could FF and REW without a problem.

My origianal problem with VLC was not VLC's fault. I uninstalled SageTV from my computer and voila, problems solved. I already wasted over $200.00 on the Sage software and their "mvp license" which sucks big time . It is amazing how a free program such as GBPVR will outperform the big players, which cannot even stream directly from DVD.

i hear that! imagine all the programmers they have on salary there at sage, trying their hardest to make something they people want,when GB is doin it better for free Smile
funny thing is,they'd have a much easier time if they just listened to the users...
here, it's a win-win situation, we help Sub, he gives us cool new stuff to play with..and we give him new ideas to keep him busy...lol
with most software companies,it's a win/whatever-we-don't-care-long-as-we-get-our-dough situation...
glad i could help...
yet another 'impossible' feature brought to you by us lowly 'users' lol
Enjoy

On the subject of 23 vs 29 fps, My TMPGENC DVDAuthor is rejecting the mpg created by mencoder as it says "DVD Complaint videos must be 29.97 FPS". You mentioned on a prevoius post:

"vlc just uses telecine to make the file look like it's 29.97"

Can mencoder do the same so that the resulting mpg is 29.97 ?

The reason I ask is that I believe this is a better way of ripping DVDs. Instead of using dvddecrypter, then dvdshrink, One can simply use mencoder on the main title and create a DVD compliant mpg that can then be imported onto TMPGENC DVDAuthor. (Of course, only on DVD's that you own Smile )

GBPVR Rocks !!!!

ok,just edit -mpegopts to include :telecine like:
-mpegopts format=dvd:tsaf:telecine
and you'll see messsages about it adjusting for it and outputting 29.97 fps
that should make it dvd compliant if that's all it needs...

Thanks PBS. It worked great.

It only gave me some warnings about GOP Fields being too long and the combined video and audio rate exceeding 9800 or something like that.

I'll see if after creating the DVD I can play it on my standard DVD Player .

Now, to pickle your brains a bit further, do you think that mencoder can also grab the "Closed Captions" data captured from a Hauppauge PVR250 WITH gbpvr and overlay it on the output the same as the DVD version ?.

In other words: PVR250 --> MPG (With Captured Closed Captions) --> mencoder (With whatever Command line arguments) --> Overlay --> new MPG file with overlayed Closed Captions --> MVP

This could make the "You_cannot_view_Subtitles_or_Closed_Captions_on_the _MVP" subject a myth and make the MVP the ultimate media device for a lot of peolple screaming at Hauppauge to fix their firmware to decode closed captions.
