Something else worthy of note -
it seems that 2 pass AVI conversion - the second pass is not restricted to the specified resolution or bitrate -

I am trying convert an 8 set of VOB files (4GB) from a movie to mpg. Seems like it's stuck on the 1st file for over a half an hour. The "Processing time" still says 00:00:00. The only thing created so far is "VTS_08_1.JoinedVOBs.mpg"

Actually, looking at the console window, I notice it is indeed doing something. I did restart it. I'll keep you posted!!

FYI

Yeah, the first step of Trancoding a Vob set to one MPG is a simple copy join of each file in the Vob set and can take a long time...

Vob01_01.vob
Vob01_02.vob
Vob01_03.vob
Vob02_01.vob

In the above example, when you have selected the first file to be transcoded and your have 'Join Seq. Vobs' Checked from the 'reserved tab', only the first three files will be copied together into the temp directory

Vob01_01.vob + Vob01_02.vob + Vob01_03.vob = %temp%\TempLarge.vob

Because this is a copy, the 1 GB files all have to be copied into their place in the new VOB. This takes time. I spawn a DOS box, and there is no feedback that this action is happening. You sort of have to wait and have patience. It's only a copy operation, and yet it seems to be processor intensive...

Once the very large VOB is created, ffmpeg is called to convert the VOB into an MPEG, using the parameters in ZProcess. In theory, you can just rename the VOB to an MPG and it will be fine, but the bitrate and resolution make the files huge! So using something like 640x480 at 4000 bitrate will make the resulting MPG much smaller in file size... (even 2000 looks OK to me...)

You could even transcode right there and then to AVI, (divx or xvid) but you won't like the result... ffmpeg isn't really that good or efficient as a AVI transcoder... It works best as something INTO an MPG transcoder...

After the transcode, the huge Temp VOB is deleted....

That means that you need almost twice the size of the DVD for Hard drive space, not even counting the space reuired for the resulting MPG....

This is not really designed for Main Movies. It's not that quick and space efficient... I added this feature only after I wanted to snag small puppet vigniettes from my Baby Einstein DVDs for my daughter to watch over and over... For small clips, it's really quite convenient...

First, thanks for ZProcess. It's turned out to be a very useful tool to fix the aspect ratio problems I was having with GBPVR and my MediaMVP.

I set-up a custom task to "reset" the streaming by calling ZProcess with StopAllTranscodes. Otherwise, if I stop (by pressing stop on my remote) watching a divx movie before fmpeg is finished running, when I try to watch another stream, the MVP reboots. Is there any way to automatically get GBPVR to kill fmpeg.exe (yes, fmpeg, since ffmpeg seems to exit as soon as it spawns fmpeg) when playback is stopped?

This is really the only serious problem I'm having right now. Maybe this could be accomplished by not releasing ffmpeg from memory and holding a reference to the spawned fmpeg process. I'm making the assumption that GBPVR will kill ffmpeg when the movie is stopped. If that's the case, then ffmpeg can kill fmpeg when it's killed.

Sorry if I'm asking already answered questions. I've read this thread so many times I'm a little dizzy. :-)

I'm glad that you're enjoying ZProcess. You're using a brand new feature (StopAllTranscodes) and it looks like you're using it the way I had intended.

I believe that you should not have the problem if you are also using the updated 'hunter.exe'. Check your versions against the versions in my signature, and get back to me if you're still having trouble...

Hmm. I updated hunter even though the file versions were the same. Anyway, it has made no difference.

I ran into some quirks installing ZProcess. Somehow I managed to download an old version that did some quirky stuff. I removed it all and reinstalled it and all worked fine -- apart from the hanging fmpeg process.

When should hunter get called? I've never noticed it in the task list. Is there any information I can provide you with?

If I install a new version of GBPVR e.g. just today there was new version :-) .... will ffmpeg be replaced BACK to the ffmpeg that I renamed to fmepg ... i.e. will a ZProcess re-install be necessary?

Hmmm. Great question. I had to look. (I just updated too, but haven't used Zprocess...)

No, there is no problem. It seems that the update/installer doesn't touch the file (ffmpeg.exe) if it's there already...
