That's your problem, no twisted pair!!! see how in the setup I showed that Green/White and Blue are the second pair and Blue/White and Green are the third pair?

You have to make it a twisted pair straight through, not just a 1 for 1 straight through of any order. Both ends are wired the same. Try it, you'll like it!

I will explain why. To eliminate noise you have to have a twisted pair. The twisting cancels out noise and that is why cat5 and phone cabling has the pairs twised. For ethernet, pins 1 and 2 are the transmit + and - and will be on the orange twisted pair. Pins 3 and 6 are the receive + and - and will be on the green twisted pair. That's the short version of the story. For noise free cat5 it needs to be that way for ALL of your cables, but most importantly the long ones!

That would be your problem.

The wiring shold be:

white/green-------------white/green
green-------------------green
White/orange------------White/orange
blue--------------------blue
white/blue--------------white/blue
orange------------------orange
white/brown-------------white/brown
brown-------------------brown

Note the orange pair are split up by the blue pair.

The way you had it, there would be excessive crosstalk/interference
as you were not using each twisted pair togeather, but only
one conductor each from two different pairs. Not good over a long distance..

My Setup:
Windows Server 2003 SP1 on AMD XP2200+, 1 Gig DDR Ram, 1 x 200 Gig and 1 x 160 Gig Seagate Harddrives, Hauppauge PVR500MCE
2 x Hauppauge MVP's (Bedroom and Lounge)

BigTed's selection would work just fine and is that same as below but the colors he chose for the pairs are not industry standard. His is for T568A which is the universal telephone standard for RJ45, not the Cat5 Ethernet universal standard for RJ45. The universal standard for ethernet RJ45 is T568B.

The proper color/pinout for T568B is:

Look at the RJ45 connector from the side opposite the clip. Pin 1 is the leftmost pin.

Pin 1. Orange/White--------------------Orange/White
Pin 2. Orange--------------------------Orange
Pin 3. Green/White---------------------Green/White
Pin 4. Blue-----------------------------Blue
Pin 5. Blue/White-----------------------Blue/White
Pin 6. Green----------------------------Green
Pin 7. Brown/White---------------------Brown/White
Pin 8. Brown----------------------------Brown

Regardless, the way you made your "straight through" cable will not cary 100Mb data on cable length of more than ~7meters. And in shorter lenghts you are still going to have deminished signal quality.

Replace those ends!! Use either the T568B or T568A pinouts, but make sure both ends are the same!!! That will undoubtedly correct the problems you are having.

So I cabled it wrong, wow I'll bet that will solve the problem. I'll redo the cable ends tonight when I get home and post the results.
Thanks again

Glad that helped. It's a pretty common thing ... once you know it you will always remember!
