Hibernate taking longer is fine with me, as long as I can have it all shut off when It's not being used.....so Hibernate is basically total shut down that can be woken up for events....? and standby uses power still......?

I still wonder what and why standby wont turn off the fans....strange

Ok, how about this, If I have gbpvr running will the system take weather and\or the news ticker as activity and not go into hibernate mode in 30 minutes as I have it set to do, my wife put it into hibernate within gbpvr last night and when I got up this morning the system was running but EPG didn't update nor did anything else I had set to run......?

thanks

Well, basically true. But the computer will still use *a little bit* of power even in hibernate. It has to, in order for things to be able to wake it up. For example, a press on the mouse button should wake the computer up, and it has to be able to sense that mouse press, hence it uses a little bit of power all the time. But a lot less than standby does.

If you get the computer to go into standby automatically, then it should be no different to get it to go into hibernate. That said, there are a number of things (and quite a few threads on the forum talking about it) that can prevent the computer from going into hibernate/suspend/standby. On my computer, I had to disable the "next recording" panel in order to get it to work...

I had to knock the GBPVR screensaver on the head for my system to go into standby.

This page from dell gives a good table on the differences between various power states.

Also this and this has more info on XP standby/hibernate problems. Have you tried shortening the time for the system to go to sleep? You might have some innocuous program kicking in just before or at 30 minutes and doing some maintenance jobbie...
