Don't get me wrong - I am amazed at what you have been able to achieve (especially when put alongside the enormous resources that MS have). I still think that it bears favourable comparison with mce. I don't suppose you will ever port it to linux - then those of us who don't like XP, let alone mce, would be very happy?

Of course, I don't know what is involved in adding functionality to automate the xmltv acquisition process. As you say, the config program just expects the xml file to be available, but where do you get it from and what do you do with it then?Big Grin .

My comment was more about the fact that there didn't seem to be a HOWTO for it anywhere in the forum - I thought that was the sort of thing that I might find there. The bit in the wiki is rather thin to say the least.

Thanks for taking the time to respond

Regards

Richard

You said earlier that you get UK TV by sat. If so then check this out

http://www.birtles.org.uk/xmltv/

After you configure it, it grabs the xmltv info from the radio times website and puts it into a file that is read by gbpvr. You can automate it all by putting the appropriate command in a batch file that gbpvr executes at a time you designate (usually in the early hours of the morning).

Hi Arjay
Sorry if my earlier post turned into a bit of a rant about MCE I just had to get it off my chest Wink
The XMLTV guide setup is probably the hardest thing with GBPVR, I came to GBPVR via SageTV. They have a similar TV guide system and I used the setup hints in their forums for that, and the Birtles website allready listed in this thread. When I switched to GBPVR the same setups worked.

Andrew

smeghead - thanks for the link. Boy I wish I had this 2 days ago:o . I spent hours reading, googling (or rather gogglingBig Grin ). I finally found a dutch guys howto and fiddled around with that. The first time, I tried Bleb TV whatever that is. It took 45 minutes to run after gbpvr config, and all I got was the channel names - no listings. I have finally got xmltv now so that's OK. However, i am going to read up the info in your link as there is loads I still want to know.

cosmocat - sorry, I never saw your rant about mce (I could have added to that believe meWink . Was it in this thread?

I figure that one of you guys, with more experience than I have, could/should write a little howto for xmltv and get it "stickied" in this forum. I reckon it might save folks hours.

I take sub's point that gbpvr is "not for beginners" but they are going to try it anyway. The install for gbpvr is already so good, that it seems a shame not to have an idiot's guide to acquiring the epg - that is the only hard bit that I can see??

I love Linux...my primary workstation runs Kubuntu as does my wife's, so a Linux GB-PVR would be awesome. However, I won't hold my breath Smile - Transitioning from the .net platform to Linux gcc/qt/gtk or whatever would probably mean a total rewrite.

For me, setting up Myth under Ubuntu was relitively painless, but I hated the video plugin look-n-feel. Plus no resume function for AVIs which was a deal killer too.

Rock-solid stable though...
