I am a self-employed carpenter and part-time landlord.

NO IT or programming experience whatsoever. The only computer programming class I ever took consisted of using punch card machines in the basement of the university and then giving a stack of them to the computer guy to run your program.

I've been using GBpvr for about 1 1/2 years now so I am a good testament to how easy the program is to use for the general public.

I tell people that I'm an undertaker (although I'm not), they say "Really, I bet you have some good stories to tell". It's a better response to telling them I work in IT, people always say "I've got a problem with my pc, what do you think it is", I think car mechs get the same problem.

It support.
I'm the guy people call so they don't have to call the helpdesk & sometimes when they call the helpdesk they tell them to call me.

I don't if it's because i'm very good at my job or the helpdesk is very bad at theirs.

Eitherway it's not a bad job alltogether I will probably start taking classes in the fall towards a degree in computing.

I'm a Telecom Tech, for a CLEC, soon to be one of the largest CLEC's in the country. (We have just been aquired). I'm supposed to be a Network Tech, but I do just as much if not more Customer Site install/support.

I've installed or repaired everthing from a POTS(Plain old telephone service) line to a OC-192 (That's a big circuit) The latest trend is high bandwidth ethernet ckts 10mb to 300mb delivered via optical fiber over a sonet protected network.

Interesting that perception is reality - of the 8 options, 7 of them are directly or indirectly associated with IT!

Me, I'm a Product Quality Planning Engineer in the automotive industry; I graduated with my Engineering degree and then a Business Management degree in the UK, which led to me being made "an offer I couldn't refuse" to emigrate to the US... and here I am. People like me are the reason you don't have to 'reboot' your car at every stop sign Wink

For me, 'computers' are a tool, a hobby, and a passion - in that order; I love to tinker, and I provide support to family and friends ("will remove spyware for beer and pizza" Big Grin )

My wife has her own video-editing business and she keeps me honest with my tinkering; while I might get a kick out of poking around in config files, networks, etc., to her it's a tool like any other - the washing machine, the toaster - and 'should just work'.

Doesn't stop me messing though....

I started off life as an electronics engineer, but although my degree says I'm now a physicist, I'm really still an opto-electronics engineer. Although I've been on the teaching faculty of my university in the past, I've been able to avoid a 'real' job for a while now. Currently I'm on my second post-doctoral fellowship, this one funded by the New Zealand government, and the previous by the US government. So, I have a little knowledge about all sorts of computer related things (enough to be dangerous Big Grin).
