There's a few things that I've found can help cut down on this junk:
1) Use the image verification in member registration
2) Ban certain domain names for e-mail addresses
3) Use the e-mail verification link in member registration (needed because otherwise they can just enter any random e-mail address)
4) Use aggressive e-mail banning, so that you can ban addresses with names like "viagra" "plasma" etc in them

I believe this has been attempted, but was unsuccessful due to some of the mods running on the forums and lack of support from the vendors (presumably because it is not a vanilla install)

Since it isn't flooded w/ it here, my guess is these accounts are being generated manually--either by one of the more industrious scumbags of the spamming community, or by some kid in Vietnam or India doing these for $0.02 per account as an alternative to sewing Nikes or answering questions about why the HD just died in someone's Dell.

Why was the blonde so frustrated?
Whenever she asked someone, "What time is it"?, she got a different answer.

I'm currently doing 1 and 3, but I'm also starting to think I'll need to look at the specific domains and address. Arrg! painful...
