This is a killer deal! I have bought a few of these for client builds. $99 gets you the Athlon 64 and a GOOD motherboard. This board is a great budget board, has an AGP slot, and 3 pci slots. It is socket 754 (the oldest Athlon64 socket) but they run great, they run cool as well.

AMD Athlon 64 3400+ with FREE Gigabyte Motherboard Click the link, then click "combo's" just above where the customer reviews start. You will see the Gigabyte and other board combo's.

As the processor is an OEM processor, you will need a cpu cooler. I don't know how much room you have but either of the following will work.
Actic Cooling Freezer Pro 64
Zalman CNPS7000B-ALCU

I have and use both coolers. The Arctic Cooling is a little quieter and a little cooler than the Zalman, but they are both GREAT coolers. Go with the Zalman if you don't have a lot of room in the case, but measure and double check clearances in your case before ordering the Arctic Cooling. Smile

Processors:
Sempron 64 Socket 754 Socket AM2
Athlon 64 Socket 754 Socket 939 Socket AM2

Motherboards:
Socket 754
Socket 939 has only 1 board that is mATX w/ AGP: ASUS A8V-MX Socket 939 VIA K8M800
There are no Socket AM2 boards that have an AGP slot.

I don't keep up on Intel's, and you had an AMD to start with so I stuck with that theme. Plus, this way you don't have to replace your ram. Smile If you are thinking about AM2, watch it, as a lot of the new AM2 stuff uses DDR2 ram, so you'd have to buy RAM as well.

Killer deal indeed............

Thank you for your efforts on this, 2 additional questions:
- my compaq is running PC2100 mem sticks - no prob??
- it might make sense to buy a case for this motherboard combo, any suggestions (front-back ventilation).

I checked you new rigs Antec case............really, really like it. Unfortunatly my configuration dictates a vertical box.

Thanks again

The 2100 should run fine, the board should slow the bus down to match the memory. 512 of PC3200 is roughly $45, might not be bad idea to throw in a ram upgrade either. I always built the board with 2700/3200.

I have built many a pc in this case, nice case, nothing flashy comes with a decent 350w psu. I have built the above cpu/board combo in this case. You might be able to find other for cheaper, but not at this quality point.

Here are a couple others that I built in and really really like as well:

Yeah, its cool! I really really like it, and so far it seems to run quiet!!! It is not a vertical case, the layout and design not to mention thermal characteristics are for a "desktop" type case.

I'll post pics when I am done.

Thank you again for your assistance.....

I am now figuring out if I can reconfigure the cabinet where the PC resides - I
really like your new case. It has the appearance of a Home Theatre componant and not that of a PC.

I'd like to see the final config!!

I didn't really want to buy a new DVD-RW when I bought it. All 4 of mine are beige, which would look horrible in a case that has a silver front; black wouldn't look much better. Asus and NEC supposedly make silver optical drives that match very closely. I have a spare beige faceplate, I think I am going to try and spray it silver, if its close, Ill use it. Otherwise I'm not planning on putting an optical drive in it at all. That's what networks are for. Smile LoL

I will post some "finished/installed" pics when I get everything done.

If you can find the space, it is an AWESOME case! But make sure to measure, it is a pretty good size case, and you will need some room around for cooling air. I have it running right now with 120mm's on the lowest setting, Cool 'n' Quiet enabled and the stock heat sink/fan and it is QUIET! Right now it is idling at 28*C, I expect that to come down to 26*C or 27*C when I get the Zalman on it. Also, all I can hear is a little of the CPU fan and the hard drive. From 6 feet away.... I can't even hear a defrag running on the drive... its that quiet!

If you can't tell, I am STOKED to get it in. Big Grin
