yea,i thought so...iirc it was old info mainly due to the videocard drivers and such not being up to the task...but thesedays it should have almost the exact same abilities, if you upgrade stuff [media player etc.] to current versions..
i think it's just one mode of vmr that doesn't work, or works differently..

file system should be the same as they use nearly the same dlls for access..

i'm thinking the only real difference is the security...and i'm not too worried
about that on a protected pvr box...

i use VNC for remote desktop, so don't need that or it's services running..
you can use the latest ntfs..
drivers are pretty much exactly same, so hardware shouldn't differ..
but i think directshow filters work differently so some filters might not work right...

just wondering if there were any 'definitely won't work' in win2k things...

XP with Service Pack 2 is pretty hard to beat stability, reliability and performance.

Not to mention mainstream acceptance and support.

NPVR Rig: HP Laptop, 3rd Gen i7, 8gb DDR3, 250gb SSD (OS), Records to 6tb array on my server, Silicon Dust HDHomeRun PRIME

However, 2K is fading fast and the end of life is coming. With the sunset on 2K, the improvements to XP, and the fact that many third party solutions require XP; I think that the edge goes to XP.

BTW, whatever you or anyone else decides, I'd always recommend the Professional series for Windows OS. Worth the extra money.

I have recently gone with XP Media Centre, which is basically XP Pro with media centre on top (you don't have to run it). Also Media Centre will not join a domain, whereas Pro will. And if you require remote desktop, then Media Centre has that built-in just like pro.

Oh, and it costs less than Pro.

For who cares, you can get MCE @ newegg.com, listed 109.99 atm.

Just saying its OEM, meaning you can not use that windows key to upgrade to Vista or any other windows software, it will be denied.

I have the exact same setup and it works great.

I probably won't be moving anything to XP until the apps I want to use absolutely require it. I like to get good mileage out of things (ran 98SE through 2004-still have it on a couple boxes), and on a limited budget my $$ does me more good going into other things.

Vista has almost none of my interest. I may never use that OS Smile.

I am planning on sticking with W2K as long as I can. XP seems to prettied up for my taste and I also dislike that it has to check in with MS to make sure it's legal. I'm legal and it does not check to make sure.
