Well, I had part of that "aha" moment today.

When I turned off security (changed "Authentication" from "shared key" to "open System" everything worked. Of course, it isn't acceptable to have a wireless network with no security, so...

Any suggestions now? Besides using this as a good excuse to buy a new router?

thanks,
Tony

I have my DI-524 set to Open System but I do use a WEP key.

Here's some info I found.
Quote:As long as you are using mandatory WEP for encryption you don't really gain any security by using shared key authentication, since packets won't be passed if the client doesn't have the WEP key. With shared key, during the authentication process, the some data is exchanged in both encrypted and plaintext form making it easier to crack. "Best practices" is to use open authentication.

Found that info and more here.

You might also want to disable SSID Broadcast once things are synced up. This leaves little for anyone to find from your wireless access point.

My problem is that I have to *disable* WEP for the wirless side to work.

It seems pretty repeatable - disable WEP and everythign works. Enable it and it doesn't - regardless of shared key vs. open system. Am I missing something obvious?

Other thoughts?

Thanks for all the help to date!

With WEP enabled, you have selected ASCII or HEX and entered a ten character key word at both the router and at the MVP right?

Here's a pic of my DI-524 setup with the personal stuff removed.

rscheller,

Thanks to you (and everyone else) for the help.

The key was not the issue. Apparently, when I upgraded firmware, the option you show above (Wireless radio) appeared. I thought - why do I need wireless radio? - so I disabled it. Unfortunately, I didn't realize that really meant "turn off your wireless AP."

It started to dawn on me when the wireless on the laptop (which has always worked fine) didn't work either.

I now have wireless working (and the 50' ethernet cable removed).

thanks again for the help (and the patience).

Regards,
TOny
