I'm working the same problem as mojo1865 aiming to build my first PVR and I'm wondering about solving this S-video out problem with the Haup. 1000 MediaMVP rather than a graphics card. ie this one at newegg

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6815116617

Are there basic tradeoffs to think about between the two approachs? One of my requirements is to support the playing of my MP3 library, and this 1000 seems to cover both. What advantages would a setup with a graphics card with svideo have over the 1000?

Thanks,
Mark

I have wired MVP's, Reasons:- Tiny box near the TV, PC is a long way away. Easy and cheap enough to have an MVP for each TV.
TBH I can't see any advantages of a PC with graphics card for my setup.

Thanks martint123,

Does the remote that comes with the 1000 control the whole the gbpvr application environment from your Tv viewing area?

Pretty sure it will but depending on the other components in your entertainment center environment, you may want to consider a universal type remote.

The Harmony remotes are highly favored because of their activity based paradigm.

Forgot to answer that...

With the MediaMVP, you can have it next to the TV as the wired AV source for your TV (Receiver/TV) whatever your setup is and it'll run GBPVR.

With your PC and a TV out video card, the PC becomes the AV source for the TV (Receiver/TV) whatever your setup is and running GBPVR which pretty much sticks your PC next to your TV.

In general, I'd say there's little difference in the picture/audio quality with either route. And either route will play your MP3s as well.

It will truly depend on your individual needs and wants and budget.

Quote:Can anyone suggest a PCI TV output card that would be fully compatible?!?

PCI video card? What vintage computer are you plotting to use?

All you need is a modern video card with an s-video output (probably pci express or agp). I used an nVidia 6600GT so I could use the nVidia purevideo decoder. s-video hooks straight up to an old school standard def TV, works great.

What kind of video card do you currently have? Tell us more about your hardware.

What you are trying to do is not uncommon at all - it's likely the most popular GBPVR configuration.

MVP's are great, the only down fall that I have is if you want to go to the HD world with an HD tunner the MVP can not display the format without converting it back down. So if I take that step I will have to go direct attached to my PVR machine in the basement. Just someting to think about, plus need losts of space Wink

I think the only thing that is missing with the MVP and it's remote is the text keyboard for use in the "search" function of GBPVR.

Hard to tell for sure but from this picture at Hauppauge's website for the PVR-150MCE, I think I can see text next to the number keys.

Of course there may be different versions of the OEM Hauppauge remote too?

believe me: the PVR350 has video out. i had a PVR350 in the past & have been using that video out. it had occasional crashes, like for the most other users here, therefore nobody recommend that card for video out Wink
