I was able to get vista into something resembling classic mode, but like w/ IE 7, you can tell they're trying to ween you off classic (I guess alomst legacy) setups.

Since starting the following rant thread about Vista:

http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php?t=25549

... I have since given it another try on my main desktop machine - not my stable PVR.... that's just suicidal! - and am dual-booting Vista and XP. I am neither a Microsoft evangelist or hater; it just seems to me that Vista is inevitable. As newer, more stable drivers and software emerge for Vista I am able to compare my best possible experience with Vista to that on my XP partition. As of now, XP is still my automatic boot option and main environment. I have to agree with sub that it's a little sluggish on the same hardware. Perhaps it always will be.

By the way, if you are dual-booting, check out a free program called EasyBCD which provides a GUI menu to set up dual boot options, defaults, etc. Configuring Vista's "BCD" boot-loader manually is not for the faint of heart.

What drives me nuts, and I presume you guys are in the same boat I am as "the smartest computer guy my family & friends knows" (:p ) is that when they call me with a problem, because they aren't running Classic I have just a heck of a time communicating with them.

I suppose I should run "non-Classic" once in a while just to get comfortable with it, but in the end it's my understanding that it "spoon feeds" the user, such that all users' interfaces look different from every others'? Dumb. I guess that's why they gave us "remote desktop" but which of your relatives & friends knows how to use THAT!!!!!????!! Big Grin

I picked up a new laptop at Circuit City for $569 which came with Vista Home Premium. Of course, $569 doesn't get you a lot of hardware, 2Ghz AMD Turion 64, not dual core, 120GB and 1GB shared with video which I knocked down to 128 for the vid and things run smoothly counter to the "must have 256 or else". Sometimes it's sluggish where it feels like a PC with a disk that's fragmented; most of the time performance is fine, apps are quick to launch and responsive including video scrubbing but the stacking/indexing/sorting file system features can really be slow until the files have been indexed and even then it can take a while viewing file details in Explorer with the details view.

The processor seems to always have something going on though and idles at 10-20% utilization.

The only time I see sluggish performance is during gameplay. I needed a new system to play Command and Conquer 3. The game really slows down at times, but again, it's nothing that I haven't experienced before. When I switched the video memory from 256 to 128, I even noticed a slight performance increase, but the video settings in game are at the low setting and moving to medium is unplayable. I'd likely see much better overall performance at 2GB and restoring the video ram to 256.

After reading a lot of negative press I wasn't expecting a lot. I've had nothing but a positive experience. Aero Glass is just beautiful to look at on a widescreen monitor. And after I got used to the address bar in Explorer, I found myself wanting in XP. The new Explorer was really the most difficult change to accept, but you need to learn how it works now instead of getting frustrated because you're trying to use it the way it works in XP.

i'm running classic mode w/ cleartype/antialising turned off at my laptop's native 1024x768. I can't stand antialiasing. makes fonts so darn fuzzy. dunno why everyone's doing it these days.

To put ur IE7 menu at the top, save a file w/ *.reg extension (TopMenu.reg) w/ the following contents and double click on it:
Quote:Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\WebBrowser]
"ITBar7Position"=dword:00000000
