Here is a summary from a beyond TV post with additions for GBPVR:

Updated how-to-record firewire summary/status as of 3/25/06
(1st draft...hopefully not too many errors)
================

The most complete solution to date is described below.

This is intended to be a complete how-to for BTV users wanting to record NON-5C encrypted (!!!) channels from a firewire equipped STB. If your channel of interest is 5C-encrypted, you (and we) are out of luck.

1. download the file 'firestb.msi' and the readme file from the last of these links:
http://home.comcast.net/~timmmoore/wsb/h...ewire.html
http://home.comcast.net/~timmmoore/firewire/readme.htm
http://home.comcast.net/%7Etimmmoore/fir...irestb.msi

2. Run firestb.msi to install the software. During installation you only need to check the command-line apps and drivers. The other Applications are only used with MCE.

The package by default checks for MCE 2005. However, the drivers and command line utilities are useful on non-MCE machines, to install on a non-MCE machine run the following command:

MSIEXEC /i firestb.msi IDENT=0

3. Connect your firewire port on the set top box to your PC. For the MOT6200 with 2 firewire ports, use the one on the LEFT (viewed from the front). If your port is active, you will see 3 or 4 newly detected devices. When prompted by windows to install drivers, hit cancel on everything.

Power off the cable box.

Reboot. Power on the cable box.

When asked to install drivers for the detected hardware, install
drivers for the Tuner, and the Panel device. On the one or two unknown devices, choose cancel.

Now go into your device manager, and disable the one or two unknown devices so they don't bother you every time you boot. All you need is support for your tuner device and the panel device.

4. Test your setup as directed in the readme under "Firewire Channel Change Testing". Make a note of the device number you are using - you will need this later.

5. You can test recording using capDVHS or even VLC - just google them and firewire (or skip to 6 and test with a graph)

6. For GBPVR and firewire if channel change is working and recording tests function then create a firewire graph (It's a TS stream). I use NVidia decoders and its literally two filters. Creeat one that pushes the stream to GBPVR filewriter and another that renders it.

6.5 Play the render graph - start on a local channel since it is very likely it is unencrypted - with your STB remote handy move up and down and find and record which channels are unencrypted for later

7. Install the graphRecorder plug-in -
http://gbpvr.com/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Plugi...ion=browse

8. Point to your motorola graph and point to the channelw.exe [device #] {channel} in the config for graphRecorder

9. Set up like any capture device with the unencrypted channels

10. Enjoy, I occasionally need to power cycle the STB (need to unplug) because the firewire connection seems to get confused sometimes.
