I'm not so sure Sony should be opening the champagne just yet. The time that has been lost to the format war is probably half the life span of Blu Ray. Many of the next gen disc players that Sony and Toshiba did not sell over the last 3-5 years will never be sold.

In this day and age it really seems silly to go to a store to pick up a piece of plastic with a movie on it, then make another trip to return it. Downloads through STB's, game consoles and PC's are going to take over eventually.

If Sony "won", it was a very expensive win. Everyone involved (including the consumer) would have been better off if they could have worked all this out years ago.

yes, the future is definitely over the wire.

At this point it's much easier for me to obtain HD content illegally than legally.

That speaks volumes.

Personally I think flash media price will come down enough to be the next portable medium for HD movies.

Agree, I have never bought and will not ever buy anything Sony.

Audio CD? OK, the technology was heavily based on existing Philips laser disc technology but Sony played a part in it coming to the market.

Sony really should have known better since they are famous for the most expensive and stupid format war in history (betamax).

Kinda seems to me that JVC started the war (betamax pre-dated VHS).

I can't work up enough energy to get passionate about which technology 'beats' another in a so called 'war'. In saying that though, I'm a bit pee'd off that we don't see many steam trains these days.

Not a nock against anyone, but I myself don't get the "I hate company X" sentiment.

Probably because I lack the passion about consumer products these younger folks have (Cripes I'm not even 40!!!!).

I see it all the time.

In the U.S. there is large brand loyalty to Auto manufacturers..

"I hate Ford"
"I hate Chevy"

Funny how nobody hates the little guy. It is always the front runners.

The fact that is plays Blu-Ray? -meh, so what.
I never bought regular DVD's. I don't plan on buying Blu-Ray movies so the format war doesn't mean anything to me. (I rent via mail).

Betamax was technically superior to VHS in almost every way (I should just say every way, but there must have been one way it wasn't), yet VHS won.

I'm not an early adopter either at work or in my leisure time (unless it's free), so I was never really affected by the problem.

I don't share this sentiment, but think I understand why people do - your cash/time investment has just been trashed by 'commercial forces' - where do you go to complain/look for advice/etc - I suppose you might start to dislike the company you see as being the cause of your problem - who knows...

What about the people who are buying hard disk PVRs - and using them to store their photos and digital home videos - the hard disk will die sometime - they might not be too happy with the kit maker...

As far as products go, when it comes to looking for help or making suggestions for development, not everybody is lucky enough to be a member of this forum.

When a combo player did come out, it ended up being more expensive than buying separate Blu-ray and HD DVD players.

This statement is not true of the PC side of things. Set top boxes maybe but not PC. There is no way I could buy separate Blu-Ray and HD DVD readers for less than the $300 my LG drive cost.

ROTFL thats exactly the reason i avoid everything from apple. no ipod, no itunes, no iphone. it's not really hate. i just dont want to support a company with their business practice i.e. sell overpriced stuff like the iphone with reduced functionality (sorry, no UMTS because of uuuhhmmm... energy consumption, maybe next version) AND afterwards getting a big chunk of the money you have to pay for using that phone. sadly that also means no mac mini, would otherwise be a nice little gadget with a good price & low noise profile.

i tend to avoid the overpriced & the cheap stuff, no matter which company. the overpriced: well i dont have money to throw out the window. the cheap stuff: you almost always don't get the quality you need & end up buying the right stuff afterwards, that's bad too, you end up with cheap quality & the right stuff for the price of the overpriced
