I would imagine it's like the DOS command subst, where it's more of a mapping...

Just looked it up and it seems its similar but opposite. don't want to hijack, but how do you hardlink in XP and Vista. This seems like a good tip for the wiki...

hard links originated from some real OS (i.e. linux / unix & the likes). windows has built in support for them since w2k but no tool or interface to set them (again: dunno about vista), so you'll need some 3rd party app to create them. when you do have them you can manipulate them (sort of at least): i.e. create a hard link to a file, your os will tell you that file is twice there. move them around as you want, that will only change the MFT to point to the location. delete one file (no matter which) => one hard link is removed, the other still points to the real data. remove the other file => the last entry in the MFT is deleted & the data also

there is only one thing you could do to avoid that but that might be to late as you already have your machine...
only solution to avoid HD failure:
- stick as much RAM as possible in your setup (you'll definitely need more than 4GB, so you'll also need the 64bit version of XP/Vista)
- create a RAM drive with about 6GB (don't know if vista supports these, XP does) & set it as recording dir. you'll need about 1GB per hour of SD recording.
- use the command line scheduler (from the current release) to record only 1 hour
- after that hour, move the file from ramdisk to HD

thats the only way to keep the HD from continuos spining around. you would definitely need some batches to move the files around (postprocessing.bat) & delete them after 48 hours. btw: it's overkill Big Grin

I have 5 computers that work 24/7 on DC science projects such as this one http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/ and HDD never spin down for years (except for restart) and drive is written to all the time as more than one project is running on the same computer due to multiple core CPUs. In addition, CPU is under 100% load ALL the time and have never had a drive fail.

The reason is that when a storm happens all the networks switch from their normal programming to cover the storm.
I am doing some research and need to capture all the networks coverage of any storms.

Ah! That makes sense. You can try the method I mentioned in the second post. Alternatively, you could simply create your own xmltv epg file that has dummy programming in say 4-6 hour blocks and simply create a postprocessing.bat that will delete files older than 48 hours.
If you want some help creating the xmltv file, just send me a pm.

I mentioned 4-6 hour blocks to make it easier to find a particular time and keep filesize down each file. You can make the blocks any size you want though. I don't think GB-PVR has a limit.
