Again FWIW... There are more and more articles and reviews out on graphics cards that include hardware video decoding acceleration, so never hurts to research any potential buys. My understanding from what I've read recently is that the cheaper cards have added chips just for video decoding, while the higher end models use the GPU & rely on the CPU more. Allegedly at around the $100 mark, last year, ATI had slightly better HD decoding performance, & those cards are now well below the $100 price range. But ATI software is another story... often a sad one I'm afraid. According to the later posts the new 8.3 drivers need less if any reg editing to enable HD accel, but IMHO it would be worth it to look at related, recent threads to see how the different ATI cards behave with your favorite or most used apps & games. I think another advantage you'd see with the 2xxx ATI cards would be price -- as the 3xxx cards enter the market more of the older ones will appear on sale at hopefully some pretty good mark-downs. OTOH the 3xxx cards handle PCI-E 2.0 if that might be important to you.

re: Avivo, it may, may not be much help in a lot of the cards before the 2xxx series, but I don't think that's the same as the hardware HD accel in the 2xxx & 3xxx versions. TO my knowledge the earlier avivo stuff focussed more on fast transcoding, and it was often faster that other methods/tools, but it's also available in a hacked version for any video card out there -- to me that hints that any ATI hardware wasn't really a factor.

The new GIGABYTE GA-MA78GM MB has awesome ATI Radeon HD 3200 on board. The on board sound is decent. This board is about $100, add $50 for a 4000+ AMD CPU (I chose the single core LE1640 2.6G AM2 from NewEgg), and add 2gb of DDR800 RAM for $39 AR. You get an incredible computer for less then $200, and you don't have to worry about capabilities regarding video.

You can get excelleration with the AGP ATI cards, but it is hit and miss. The 8.3 drivers are much better but that isn't saying much. The ATI drviers are a mess generally.

Just following up a little further, in my reasonably worthless opinion the ATI cards are slightly better at video than the NVidea cards "when they work". Unfortunately, the "when they work" caveat is a very large caveat.

mikiem is correct, the 2900 does not provide video accelleration while the 2400 and 2600 do. On the other hand, the 2400 is just too underpowered to both deinterlace and accellerate 1080i. It does a great job at deinterlacing and taking that load off the CPU should be enough to enable most CPUs to handle the rest of 1080i processing. You just won't have much if any headroom for other processes.

Buy a 2600 or 8600 if you are going to do the video card upgrade. Still, the best advice is to spend the extra $140 to upgrade your system.

Uhale's suggestions would work great. renethx has an extremely detailed thread on AVS with additional suggestions:

This thread will answer just about all of your questions about the 2x00 cards (and you'll probably need Arfster's tweaks):

And then there's the alternative answer.

Don't change anything on your machine: simply use it to record and buy one of the new Popcorn Hour devices. For less than $200 shipped you have a networked HD player that's small, silent and can handle virtually all current codecs natively, upgradable to future codecs, and runs the gbpvr interface.

This is probably what I'd do if I were starting over today.

WTG, have you tried the PDVD7 decoder lately? Your setup would be a good opportunity to see if it does indeed work exactly the same (perhaps better) than the PureVideo decoder. PDVD7 is supposed to enable all of the PureVideo features on the card -- hardware acceleration, pulldown, etc.

A general note about the newer cards for those who don't know since they are being mentioned. The extra acceleration chip on the cards is strictly for h.264 video. Well, and ATI does VC1. The extra chip will not help accelerate mpeg2, which is what the U.S. and half the other countries broadcast.
I bet Michael Bay uses GBPVR because it's awesome:

aha! Figures why I'm not seeing any significant CPU usage going down on my ASUS 780g chipset motherboard when playing mepg2 1080i videos.

But to the post, the cheapest x2 CPU should be fine with that 780g board for playing HD..I'm using an AMD 64 x2 3800+.

According to 3 different websites the 780g offloads the mpeg2 to the uvd as well as h.264

I'd like to see how they did that because I give up and can't replicate that. Overlay using AVIVO seems to be the closest if I am to believe that it's really doing it. However, I won't use overlay because it looks so clunky.

I guess I'll just have to be happy using evr and using up one full core doing it. It doesn't really matter, that's all that will be going on anyway. This won't be doing much multitasking. It's just frustrating that we keep hearing that this MB can do these great thing but I have yet to see it. It's still a good MB in its own right.
