From what I have read on their doom9 thread they don't want to spend time writing new standalone for every build they come up with, they indicated that they will build new ones when they reach the next stable release. They say if you want decoders based on a current build to download the source code and compile your self, they do list what is needed to compile. I hope a stable release comes soon I want updated decoders so I can use the hardware acceleration on my 8500gt, although it does work like dream with my 2600pro in my client.

sub, are you going to add more extensions to the h264 list so that way selecting what h264 decoder you want will affect more than ts h264 files?

Thats pretty much what I read. Personally I dont care if they compile them or someone else, but it'd be nice if the updated decoders were available. I'm surprised no one else has taken on the task. There are tons of sites out there that host nightly builds etc of various other open source projects like ffmpeg etc.

I dont want to compile them because I've got enough other stuff on my plate, and not really interested enough to want to do it myself.

Most likely yes in a future release. The complexity is that GB-PVR only contains parsing functionality for .ts and .mpg container files, so only knows what type of video codec these files use. It doesnt contain code for parsing .mkv containers, or other file types, so doesnt know what type of video decoders might be required.

Didn't work for me. I got a message saying that the codec is trying to write to protected memory and it won't play the mpeg files.

I was going to try and compile them my self, as I have the software to do it, but got discouraged when trying to figure out what todo and install. Maybe I will take another look at it this weekend since it will be a 3 day weekend.

I thought that might be the case, its not a big deal as I have just messed with the merits of the filters and try not to install anything extra on the machines.

Well I don't have to compile my self as the developer compiled the standalone decoder for the h264 when one of the people helping with testing asked for it. I have full on hardware acceleration of h264 with my nvidia card. I watched the trailer for the dark knight while comskip was going full bore in the background.
You can download from this link to the zshare upload http://www.zshare.net/download/1237146982e56028/
or goto the thread http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1140181
EDIT
For got to mention that you will probly have to do into the filters properties, though a codec manager ( I use dsf manager ) or though the gbpvr config app and select the config button for h264, to enable h264 decoding in the decoder since it is multipurpose decoder. for some reason it was off when I loaded the new file and couldn't get it to work at first, but checking the box in the last tab on the properties for h264 fixed it.

Cheers, though there seems to be something funny about that decoder. GraphEdit crashes when I choose the 'insert filter' menu option when have that decoder registered. Deregister and goes back to fine. Damn annoying.

Followed the OP's guide on a new PC just built using XP 32bit, and I am amazed. -Playing an .mkv 720p file is using just 2-3% CPU! Incredible difference to my old PC, which used around 90% CPU on 720p.
So thank you OP! The bad news is that it does not accelerate if using EVR renderer under XP, at least not for me - my CPU usage goes up to 25-30% if PVRX2 is set to use EVR.
However the only reason I was using EVR under XP was because that was the only way I got playable 720p content on my old PC, so now it's back to good old VMR.
At present I have left the H264 decoder as 'system default' in PVRX2 config. If I add the MPC decoders to <SupportedDecoders> setting in config.xml will I be able to adjust any of the decoder options?

Yes but there are not many options to mess with, also the h264 decoder selection there only effects the decoder used for ts files.

EVR gives such a better playback and eliminates any tearing that I went to Vista just for it. On Vista I see sub 10% playing back 1080p content on 780g.

True, EVR rocks the planet in Vista. I see about 7-8% for 720p on EVR H.264 movies. I haven't tried any 1080p's, but I'm sure it's about the same.

Thank God, I can now get at least some HA on this board. MPEG2 is still not working for me though.
