LilY0da,

the pvr-150 and -500 use a different chipset than the -250. while the hardware can do closed captioning, AFAIK the only driver support with those is through winMCE. that's why i shelled out the extra bucks for the pvr-250. (however, i still don't have it working right...)

Oh well, I was bored, so I plugged the 500 out and the 250 back in.
I can see the CC in recorded shows, but it doesn't work in LiveTV when I use LivePreview. When I use timeshift, I do see the CC. Not sure if normal or not, maybe Sub can tell us.

I couldn't get the CC on either cards with WinTV. Also, I wonder why the drivers in WinMCE can read the CC lines and not the default Hauppauge ones... Weirdness

i got a reply from james at hauppauge, who suggested:

> In order to have CC, you first

> attached registry patch livepreview_ON, it will take care of that.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Hauppauge\hcwTVWnd]
"LivePreview"=dword:00000001

unfortunately, when i do that, i can see closed captioning in winTV2k, but it never gets embedded in the mpeg file. the gbpvr recordings also do not produce it. at least before, it was in the 2nd and subsequent recordings.

> I couldn't get the CC on either cards with WinTV

i'm not sure why you're having even more problems than i am...
BTW i recommend the registry tweaking tool

http://www.cask-of-amontillado.com/pvr_reg.html
http://www.cask-of-amontillado.com/pvr_tweak.html

i also completely do not understand the MCE driver thing.

i got a followup from hauppauge but basically it was that there might
or might not be a bug in the drivers that cause the closed captioning not to work for the first recording, they aren't really supporting cc yet... why they don't is beyond me.

what might work around the problem would be to get the back end ("recording service"?) to make a short (e.g. 1 second) recording when it starts up. or invoke a short recording from a script that could be called at bootup. is there any way to do that?
